The Columbus Centre School of Music is committed to the development and diffusion of music both within the Italian–Canadian community and the community at large. Our music school gives students the opportunity to explore their musical passion. Our instructors have a breadth of musical periods, genres and varied teaching techniques. Our instructors cater to each individual interest, whether the aim is for leisurely fun or for preparation for the Royal Conservatory of Music and school-entry exams.
We offer a wide variety of music lessons that are open to anyone of any skill level. Our seasonal one-on-one private lessons are taught by our professional instructors. For over 30 years, our music program has developed into one of the most prominent in the community, and the progress of our students is widely admired by those who attend our two annual recitals.
In addition to in-person classes, the Columbus Centre School of Music is also offering online music classes! Our music instructors will be teaching private lessons virtually via apps such as ZOOM, Facetime or Skype. Open to new and existing students. To inquire about virtual lessons, please contact:
Music Scholarship Program
The Columbus Centre School of Music is proud to offer a music scholarship program. Music students will receive awards recognizing their exceptional talent, dedication and passion for music. The scholarships, which provide students with monies towards future Columbus Centre School of Music tuition fees, reinforce the school’s commitment to developing musical growth in children’s lives.

Meet Your Instructors
Musician and Tenor Joshua Clemenger has a passion for making music and loves helping students find the same joy! With a Masters in opera from The University of Toronto and an extensive professional resume, Joshua’s teachings include guitar, voice, piano, drums, ukulele and music production.
A professional musician, educator and audio engineer, Thomas has been playing and teaching music professionally for over 10 years. Developing a passion for music from a young age, his musical experience has led him to many instruments and genres, beginning in classical and then to folk, rock, jazz, pop and world.
Thomas was driven to gain a complete understanding of the musical process from music theory to recording and production and is a graduate of Metalworks Institute of Sound and Technology, in Performance and Engineering.
Thomas is a multi-instrumentalist who sees genres and instruments as beautiful worlds to discover and explore. He teaches guitar, piano, accordion, drums, vocals, brass and woodwinds.
With over 25 years’ experience teaching music at the Columbus Centre, Mila Germanovsky believes that musical knowledge plays an essential role in our lives. Working with each student’s unique personality and academic level Mila teaches music theory, history of music and the importance of music foundation.
Mezzo Soprano Amanda Weatherall holds a Masters of Music in vocal literature and performance from Western University. Since earning her Masters, she has been teaching both privately and with various local music schools. She teaches voice and piano and has found that musical practice and education enhance every other aspect of her students’ studies. Amanda believes that music is for everyone, and that no matter what you are pursuing in your life, if you are 5 years old, 100 years old, or anywhere in between, music can help you to grow and to look at things from a new perspective.
Amanda is also a celebrated performer and was awarded a place in Vancouver Opera’s Young Artist Program, where she performed as the Wife in the Music Shop, a Canadian Premiere, and as Carmen in Carmen: Up Close and Personal, a new adaptation of the classic work by Bizet. Her other selected operatic credits include the title role in Bizet’s Carmen, Romeo in Bellini’s i Capuleti e i Montecchi, Fox in Janáček’s Cunning Little Vixen, Olga in Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin, and Third Lady in Mozart’s Magic Flute.
A Trinidad National Music Festival prizewinner, Ms. Mendez hosted her own radio show “Cherry Sings” on Radio Trinidad as a teenager. After singing for Marion Anderson in Trinidad, Ms. Anderson’s accompanist Franz Rupp, recommended Ms. Mendez to participate in the Marion Anderson Vocal Competition in Philadelphia. An influential figure in the New York music scene, Mr. Rupp also recommended Ms. Mendez to Lotte Leonard at the the Mannes College of Music in New York City where Ms. Mendez was given a scholarship. Ms. Mendez continued her studies at the University of Toronto. Her teacher was baritone Louis Quilico. She also studied with Daniel Ferro (The Juilliard School) and Shirley Verrett(The University of Michigan). She has appeared in concert at the White Mountains Festival in New Hampshire, Queen’s Hall in Trinidad, the Purcell Room in London England, and the Gubbio Festival in Italy. Her first Toronto role was in the Theatre Fountainhead production “Africa in the Caribbean”. Ms. Mendez also won Queens of the Bands in the Caribana festival and later served as a judge in the calypso competition. As the founder of ArsMusica Community Concerts, Ms. Mendez has presented a series of concerts since 1994 at Heliconian Hall, The Arts & Letters Club, University of Toronto Hart House, York University, The Columbus Centre, The Church of St. George the Martyr, St. Michaels and All Angels, The 1st Unitarian Congregation, Orangeville Opera House, The Stone Church, and Mt. Dennis United Church.
As an educator, Ms. Mendez has taught a diverse and successful group of voice students from the opera, music theater, theater, and film genres including Victor Micallef (The Tenors), Ryan Harper, Brainerd Blyden-Taylor (Nathaniel Dett Chorale) and even comedian Jim Carrey!
Ms. Mendez has also served as a guest soloist with Coro San Marco at the Laval Quebec Choral Festival and the Singing Together Festival (A celebration of cultural diversity through choral music). In 2015, in collaboration with the Singing Together Festival, Ms. Mendez successfully led a 40 member choir tour to Italy with her son Colin Mendez Morris and Maestro Daniele Colla, culminating with appearances at the Cantus Angeli Choral Festival and a tour along the Amalfi coast.
Thomas Arthur is a professional musician, audio engineer and educator who has been playing and teaching music professionally for over 10 years. Arthur has thoroughly toured the GTA and played in many festivals, events and functions over the past decade and has conducted concert bands at various festivals at the Elementary and Middle School levels. Specializing in accordion, Arthur will help students see genres and instruments as beautiful worlds to discover and develop.

Marco Marrone has been a music instructor at Columbus Centre School of Music since 1984. As a soulful clarinet and saxophone player, he has performed and continues to play with many musical ensembles throughout the GTA. As an electronic musician/composer skilled at using midi and digital applications, he has scored original music for short films and live performances. Recently retired from St John Henry Newman Catholic High School in Scarborough, a position he held and loved for 35 years, his fluency in many styles of music will lend itself well to students who are willing to learn.
Aysel Taghi-Zada is a passionate violinist devoted to the performance of classical and contemporary music. She has collaborated with distinguished musicians and frequently performs with orchestras such as: the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Canadian Opera Company, Windsor Symphony, Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra, Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony Orchestra and Toronto Concert Orchestra.Students who wish to learn from the best of the best will easily find it here with Taghi-Zada.
Janelle Yausif has a passion to help and encourage students to find their own voice and explore the world of music! Yausif is a classically trained soprano opera singer and pianist. Having studied both piano and voice from the age of 6, Janelle is now fluent in the styles of both pop and classical. Janelle’s singing career has already left her performing almost all over the world, with multiple-sold out concerts and tours.
Registration
Columbus Centre School of Music welcomes back returning and new students – both children and adults. We are committed to the level of instruction we provide and will work together to place you or your child with the appropriate instructor based on your needs and interest. Registration for music programs is ongoing. If there is a particular day, time or instrument you wish to learn, please contact the Arts, Youth & Culture Department.
Online Registration
New Students: Click “Register” and fill out the registration form and parent/student information, then select a class you wish to enroll in.
Currently enrolled families: To log in, enter the email address you gave us on your registration form or created when you registered online or you CLICK “Forgot my Password” and you will be guided on how to create a new password.
Registration is complete when the online registration and payment have been received and processed by the Arts, Youth & Culture Department. Lessons will not begin until registration is complete. Please enter any applicable promo codes, before checkout.
Payment due in full, upon registration. We accept credit cards, debit, cheques and cash (exact amount). NSF cheques will be charged a $30.00 service charge. Payments must be re-submitted within 48 hours. Payments are accepted in full or in 3 installments.

5% discount on additional siblings.
5% multiple instrument discount if taking two or more instruments.

The Arts, Youth & Culture department reserves the right to change program dates, times, rooms and instructors during the year. We will strive to provide two weeks notice.
